Ruby Somera and I are indeed strangers. We’ve never met and we may never meet. Ironically we have lots in common. I reached out to her because her Instagram page was breathtaking and I loved her photo captions. (Ruby could probably teach a class on Instagram photo quotes.) She could have ignored my email or written me off as spam, but she didn’t and here we are.

I caught up with Ruby in between both of our busy schedules to ask this lovely IG photographer a few things. In the process, I learned that both her I share a special sentiment. We both miss our beloved Dad’s.
Me: What makes you smile?
“I have a practice that I do every morning to help set my intentions for each day. I write down 10 things that I’m grateful for. It could be anything, big or small, but I really try to breathe into the gratitude & feel it deeply.
We, as humans, can get really bogged down with putting way too much focus on what we don’t have rather than what we do have. I’m guilty of it myself. But when I focus on what I do have then all the worry and doubt that I may have been experiencing somehow doesn’t feel quite as bad. I suggest this for everyone.
I smile when I wake up in the morning & hear my son say, “Mommy” – my heart feels like it’s going to explode out of my chest. I didn’t know how much I would love being a mommy. I feel so lucky to experience the beauty of being his light and his inspiration (as he is mine). He’s two years old and I just love watching him grow and learn. He sees all the beauty, color & wonder in even the most mundane things. It helps me slow down & feel so much more present & connected. Life is so beautiful & such a blessing.
I also volunteer my photography services to a beautiful nonprofit organization called Soulumination. They provide professional photography for families with children who are suffering from life threatening illnesses. It gives me so much pleasure to give back to my community in a way that I can truly be of service to those in need.”
Me: What makes you sad these days?
“I wish that my dad were still alive to watch my son grow up. There’s never been anyone in the world who has ever believed in me as much as my dad did. I really miss him.”
Me: Who inspires you?
“I’m inspired by all people who live authentically & unapologetically. I’m inspired by people who don’t just talk about doing beautiful work to change the world, but who actually do it! I’m inspired by those who do things even though they’re afraid & vulnerable. I’m inspired by people who are brave enough to step into the life that they were born to live. That s#@t takes courage.”
Me: What do you love most about being a photographer?
“Oh my goodness, so many things!
I love being creative. I love storytelling. I love composition & negative space. I love light. I love making women feel inspired & inspiring. I love making women feel empowered, motivated & worthy. I love bringing out the most beautiful & authentic characteristics in women. I love making women feel supported.
I love when I show my clients their photographs for the first time & they are literally brought to tears because they’ve never felt so beautiful. When I have successfully captured their true & authentic essence, well there’s nothing that makes me feel more fulfilled.”
“I want to help women entrepreneurs from all over the world reach their highest potential through my work as a Personal Branding Photographer.”
I’ll follow up with her in 1 year to highlight her latest milestones in business and what’s making her smile one year from now.
